Don’t sweat the small stuff – in fact, be happy every time you make even the slightest positive change.
I hear so many people say, “it takes so long to lose the weight” (and then they give up), or “I’ve only lost a pound in six days, what’s the use?” (and then they give up), or they ask me, “how long will it take for me to lose 60 pounds?” (as though I have that answer handy), and then they give up.
The point is that you must get on the road and stay on the road – small changes in the right direction are good; congratulate yourself and keep moving forward. Try to adjust little things in the direction that you want to go. For example, if you want to lose weight, you know that you are eating too much sugar or refined carbohydrates or not drinking enough water or exercising, then make small changes in the direction that you want to go.
1. Add 10 minutes of exercise to your workouts every time you work out. Example: if you are doing yoga three times a week and feel it’s not enough – add a 10-minute brisk walk every day.
If you are not working out at all, do a 10-minute brisk walk every day for seven days, increase by five minutes each week until you reach 30 minutes. You will feel better, and you will see results.
2. Eat smaller portions. Look at your food (amount) and reduce what you’ve got on your plate by a small amount each meal. Again, you will notice the difference in days.
3. Eat less of what you know you are eating too much of. Example: if you eat a big bag of potato chips or cookies at night, take some out and eat the bag over two days, then three, and so on.
4. Add 16 ounces of water to your daily intake.
Small changes in the right direction give you something to be proud of, to feel in control of, and to congratulate yourself for. Good for you! Have a great summer by enjoying the little joys all around you.
